Stampede Spirit Meets Creative Expression: Celebrate Calgary’s Biggest Festival with Hands-On Workshops at Dots & Lines

Every July, Calgary bursts to life with the unmistakable energy of Stampede season. It’s a time when cowboy boots become everyday footwear, line dancing takes over downtown, and Western spirit fills the air. But beyond the parades, rodeos, and pancake breakfasts, the Calgary Stampede is also a celebration of culture, community, and creativity—and that’s exactly where Dots & Lines comes in.

This year, we’re embracing Stampede in full swing with a lineup of Stampede-themed creative workshops designed to help locals and visitors alike connect with the spirit of the festival in a whole new way. Whether you want to craft a bold piece of Western jewelry, create a home for your cowboy hat, or decorate a dessert fit for a Stampede celebration, we’ve got something for you.

But before we get into the details of our workshops, let’s take a step back and talk about what makes the Calgary Stampede such a big deal—and why it’s the perfect time to tap into your artistic side.

The Calgary Stampede: A Legacy of Celebration

The Calgary Stampede has a long and colorful history dating back to 1912, when it was founded by American trick roper and promoter Guy Weadick. His dream was to create a frontier-themed exhibition that celebrated the old West—complete with rodeo events, chuckwagon races, music, and exhibitions. What began as a six-day event quickly grew into one of the world’s most recognized festivals, drawing over a million visitors annually.

The Stampede is now known globally as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth”—a title it proudly lives up to year after year. It’s a ten-day extravaganza of live music, agricultural showcases, First Nations programming, midway rides, food trucks, fireworks, and a rodeo that features some of the best cowboys and cowgirls from around the world.

But beyond the entertainment, the Stampede is about pride. Pride in Calgary, pride in Western heritage, and pride in community. It’s a time when Calgarians open their arms (and their closets full of plaid) to the world.

Visitors from Far and Wide

What makes the Stampede even more remarkable is its universal appeal. People from across Canada—and all over the globe—travel to Calgary during this time to experience something truly unique. The energy is infectious, the outfits are bold, and the city transforms into a vibrant hub of activity. Hotels book up months in advance, restaurants prep for busy patios, and the streets come alive with music, laughter, and cowboy hats as far as the eye can see.

At Dots & Lines, we love being a part of this exciting season. But while the rides, parades, and rodeo events take center stage, we believe there’s something equally meaningful in creating something with your hands. Art allows us to connect with the culture of Stampede in a tactile, lasting way—and maybe even take a little piece of it home with us.

Dots & Lines: Where Art and Community Collide

Located in Calgary, Dots & Lines is a creative studio with a heart for community and a mission to make art accessible to all. We offer a range of hands-on workshops for all ages, encouraging people to explore different mediums, build confidence in their creativity, and connect with others through shared artistic experiences.

During Stampede season, we love bringing that creative energy into the spirit of the festivities. Our June and July workshops are specially designed to offer a fun, festive, and Western-inspired experience—no artistic background required!

Here’s a peek at what’s happening this Stampede season at Dots & Lines:

Jewelry Workshop: Stampede Style

Think turquoise, silver, leather, and bold design. In this guided workshop, you’ll design and create your very own statement jewelry pieces inspired by classic Western aesthetics. Whether you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind necklace to wear to the rodeo or some handmade earrings that scream “Stampede chic,” this class is for you.

It’s perfect for individuals, groups of friends, or even a bachelorette pre-party. You’ll leave with jewelry that not only complements your Stampede outfit but holds a personal, creative touch.

🤠 Macrame Hat Hanger Workshop

Your cowboy hat deserves a stylish home! In this beginner-friendly class, you’ll learn the basics of macrame and create a custom hat hanger that combines function with rustic charm. This piece is perfect for your entryway, closet, or even as a decorative wall feature.

It’s also a thoughtful gift idea for the hat-wearer in your life—or for yourself as a keepsake from this year’s Stampede season.

🎂 Cake Deco Workshop: Saddle Up & Sweeten Up

Love sweets? You’ll go wild for this one. In our Stampede-themed cake decorating workshop, we’ll walk you through creating mini western masterpieces using fondant, piping, and cake toppers shaped like boots, horseshoes, and cowboy hats.

This is a great activity for families, groups, or anyone looking for a playful, hands-on experience with a tasty ending. Bonus: you get to eat your creation (or show it off first)!

Creativity, Connection & Western Flair

Our workshops aren’t just about crafting—they’re about connection. Whether you’re attending with friends, family, or solo, our Stampede-themed classes offer a space to unwind, express yourself, and celebrate Calgary’s most exciting season in a meaningful and memorable way.

And don’t worry if you’ve never held a paintbrush or piping bag in your life. Our facilitators are here to guide you every step of the way. No pressure, no perfectionism—just good vibes and great company.
